The Ten Essentials, Adapted for a Family
Turn a classic outdoor safety system into a small, shared kit that adults can find quickly.

The Ten Essentials are a system for responding to delay, weather and minor emergencies. A family version should be easy for adults to locate and scaled for the whole group.
Navigation and communication
Carry an offline map, a compass you know how to use and a charged phone or other appropriate communication plan. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
Sun, warmth and light
Pack sun protection, an insulating layer for each person and dependable headlamps with spare power. Children cool down and become tired at different rates, so do not treat one spare layer as a family solution.
First aid and repair
Use a family first-aid kit sized for the group and trip length. Add a compact repair pouch for shelter, sleep gear and common equipment problems.
Fire, water and extra food
Choose an emergency fire-starting method only where it is legal and appropriate. Carry enough water—or a verified treatment plan—and reserve extra food that does not depend on cooking.
Keep it together
Store the shared essentials in one marked pouch or daypack. Adults should know its location, and older children can learn what the items are for without becoming responsible for the emergency plan.
